    AUG. 26, first class

    • Learn to be a steward of the land with the University of Maryland Extension’s online General Forestry Course . The course will be held Monday, Aug. 26, through Monday, Dec. 9. Participants will learn ways to protect trees from insects, diseases and fires; details of the forestry business; and how to create a forest inventory. $150 includes supplemental readings.     • The annual monarch butterfly program will be held Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ, Fellowship Hall, 336 Barnett Ave., Waynesboro, Pa. Use parking lot entrance. Learn about the monarch butterfly: its life cycle, migratory flight, plight, how to help, and how to raise a caterpillar into a butterfly to release. Weather permitting, after program, participants invited to pollinator & wildlife habitat, nectar garden and monarch waystation to look for monarch eggs, caterpillars and milkweed leaves.     • The eighth annual Franklin County (Pa.) Veterans Affairs Golf Tournament is set for Friday, Aug. 30, at Penn National Golf Club, 3720 Club House Drive, Fayetteville, Pa. Hosted by the Franklin County Commissioners and the Franklin County Office of Veterans Affairs. Golfers play preferred course, based on availability. Two winning teams — Founders and Iron Forge. Each member of those winning teams will win a seven-night resort stay for two. $50,000 hole-in-one contest. Winners of the Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive contests from each course win a five-day, four-night cruise for two. In-game contests, raffles, networking opportunities and more. $520 per foursome, includes greens fees, carts, a light breakfast, lunch, on-course refreshments and an appreciation gift for each golfer. Registration begins at 6:45 a.m., shotgun start at 8 a.m. Lunch and awards presentation will conclude the day. Sponsorships available.     • Registration is open for the fall 2024 session of The Woods in Your Backyard online course from the University of Maryland Extension’s Woodland Stewardship Education program . The self-directed, non-credit course runs 10 weeks from Sept. 9 to Nov. 18. The course will help landowners convert lawn to natural areas and enhance stewardship of existing natural areas.     • Applications are now available for free art classes for children Saturdays, Sept. 28, Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26, Nov. 2, 9 and 16, at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts , 401 Museum Drive (in the City Park), Hagerstown. Students will explore a wide variety of media and art styles, and will see the museum’s exhibitions. Classes are offered to children in grades one through five from 10 a.m. to noon and to children in grades six through eight from 1 to 3 p.m. Parents/guardians must fill out applications online.     • Registration is open for the NHL’s Washington Capitals DMV Girls Try Hockey For Free Day , taking place Saturday, Sept. 14, with the Hagerstown Bulldogs at the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex, 580 Security Road, Hagerstown.
