    With the 2024 Maryland high school football season set to kick off soon, we're taking a quick glance at each Washington County team.

    Boonsboro Warriors

    Coach: Mark Wadel, third year

    Last season: 8-3, defeated Joppatowne 20-12 in 1A North first round, lost to Havre de Grace 35-28 in second round.

    Top returners: Trevor Sowers, Sr., TE/LB; Parker DeBaugh, Jr., RB/DB; Graham McLean, Sr., OL/DL; Hayden Ritchie, Sr., RB/LB; Russell Colliere, Sr., RB/LB; Logan Atkinson, Jr., RB/LB; Colin Telemeco, Sr., QB; Austin Dinsmore, Jr., OL/DL;

    Key losses: Chad Wyand, RB/LB; Ryan Perry, OL/DL; Nate Elliott, OL/DL; Dan Dodson, RB/LB; Carlos Pazos, K; Logan Frantz, TE/LB; Sam Atkinson, OL/LB; Gabe Smith, TE/DB/P.

    Notes: The Warriors, who’ve advanced to the second round of the region playoffs each of the last three years, are on a historic run of success. Since going 2-8 in 2010, they’ve had 13 straight winning seasons, the longest such streak in Washington County history. … Their eight wins last year were their most since 2018, when they also went 8-3. … Boonsboro led the county in wins and win percentage (.727) last season, scoring the most points per game (30.5) and allowing the fewest (13.9). … Sowers is a returning All-County first-team linebacker. … Owen Hardy, who went 29-for-29 on extra-point kicks as a sophomore, is back on the team for his senior season after missing last year.

    Biggest challenge: "From last year's team, we graduated four out of the six offensive linemen, if you include our tight end, so I really only have two of my primary blockers back (McLean and Dinsmore)," Wadel said. "Right now, we're working to get that to fit, trying to get the right pieces in the right places."

    Reason to be optimistic: "We had the No. 1 defense in the county last year, points-wise, and a lot of those kids are back," Wadel said. "We feel really good about the defensive side of the ball."
