HOLLAND — These days, it feels almost impossible to eat out, especially for families.

Post-COVID, the cost of food has become overwhelming for many. So, we took a deep dive into local restaurants and did the math. Where can a hypothetical family of four eat in Holland for less than $50? (Pro-Tip: Our lowest comes in under $35.)

Our family consists of two parents and two children under the age of 10, dining in August 2024. Totals are based on a 6% tax rate and a 20% tip. And yes, our hypothetical family drinks water.

    Breakfast: James Street Inn

James Street Inn — 255 James St. — is open Mondays-Saturdays and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Inn has over 25 years of experience in catering and is known for its warm, welcoming environment.

The breakfast menu has a range of classics, including pancakes, skillets, steak and eggs, and biscuits and gravy. Most items on the menu are under $13.

    Our Hypothetical Family’s Order :

Adult Entrées: Ham and Cheese Omelet $10, Southern Skillet $9.50

Children’s Meals: One Egg, Toast and Bacon $3.59, One Pancake and Bacon $2.99

    Total: $26.08

Total with Tax and Tip: $33.17

Crust 54 is a family-owned pizzeria with three locations: two in Holland and one in Grandville. The restaurant slings Chicago-style deep dish and thin crust pizzas, plus a selection of salads, chicken wings and breadsticks.

Fortunately, pizza is an easily sharable meal.

    Our Hypothetical Family’s Order :

Adult Entrées: 14-Inch BBQ Chicken Thin Crust Pizza $22

    Children’s Meals: 5-Inch Cheese Pizza $7.50, 5-Inch Pepperoni Pizza $7.50

    Total: $37

Total with Tax and Tip: $47.06

The restaurant has a variety of price points, with burritos and tacos sold for $13 or less. Children's meals are priced at less than $9.

    Our Hypothetical Family’s Order :

Adult Entrées: Regular Wet Burrito $13, Three Baja Chicken Tacos $12
