People charged and sentenced over recent disorder: Key statistics

Here are the latest statistics for people charged and sentenced in connection with the recent disorder in parts of the country:

– How many people have been charged?

A total of 576 people had appeared in the magistrates’ court on charges relating to the disorder as of the end of August 22, according to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ).

Of this number, 406 were remanded in custody at their first hearing.

– How many people have been sentenced?

Some 50 people had been sentenced at the magistrates’ court by the end of August 22, while 133 had been sentenced at the crown court, MoJ figures show.

The PA news agency has compiled details for 178 adults who had been sentenced as of the end of August 23, 170 of whom have been sent to jail.

– What is the longest jail sentence so far?

Six years, which was handed to David Wilkinson, 48, of Hull , who admitted violent disorder, attempted arson and racially aggravated criminal damage, and was sentenced at Hull Crown Court.

The next longest jail term was given to John Honey, 25, of Hull, who pleaded guilty to three counts of burglary, racially aggravated criminal damage and violent disorder, and was sentenced to four years and eight months in jail at Hull Crown Court.

A jail term of three years and four months was given to Gareth Metcalfe, 44, of Southport, who pleaded guilty to violent disorder and was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court.

The same length of jail term was handed to Lee Crisp, 42, of Grimethorpe in Barnsley, who was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court for violent disorder; and to Steven Love, 41, or Hull, who was sentenced at Hull Crown Court for violent disorder.

– What is the shortest jail sentence so far?

Seven weeks, given to Jake Grainger-Quinn, 29, who pleaded guilty to carrying out a public order offence in Whitehall in central London and who was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court.

Two months in jail was handed to Lee Dunn, 51, for sending offensive messages; and to James Nelson, 18, of Horwich in Bolton, for criminal damage to property valued under £5,000.

– What is the average length of jail sentences?

The average is 24 months.

– What is the most common offence for which people have been sentenced?

Violent disorder. Some 135 of the 178 adults to be sentenced so far had been charged with violent disorder, either by itself or in combination with other charges.

Other charges that have led to jail sentences include assaulting emergency workers, possession of a knife or sharp object in a public place, publishing written material to stir up racial hatred, and causing racially aggravated intentional harassment.
