My daughter Kelli has been finishing books right and left. She has another to share with you today, The Measure by Nikki Erlick. This book is one of those that I’ll likely remember forever. It is one that opens your eyes and really makes you think, which I like. This book starts like any old book and then one night, everyone who is over the age of 22 get s box delivered to them overnight. Initially, the world goes a little crazy asking lots and lots of questions. Eventually, they find out that inside the boxes are lengths of string which represent the length of their life. At this point, not everyone has opened their box. Eventually, the government comes up with a website in which you enter the length of your string and then it will tell you how long you will live. They do all kinds of experiments on the strings to see if they can cut it or change its length in any way (they can’t). The interesting part comes to the reasons as to why people either open their box or don’t. And interestingly enough, many people have the same reasoning for opening/not opening their box, but make completely different choices about opening their box. The book goes on to tell stories of how people who are “short stringers” end up being discriminated against in the workplace and how it impacts romantic relationships they are in. It also talks about how they band together as well. There are some instances where people open other people’s boxes and how that impacts relationships. Later on, it talks about how different governments become involved in the process and impose rules upon people based on the length of their string, or just simply opening their boxes.
