Chiefs’ Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes share insights on Jon Gruden’s camp advisory role

Former Raiders coach Jon Gruden’s multi-day visit to Chiefs’ training camp this week has led to lots of jokes about the “victory lap” around Arrowhead Stadium in 2020 and upset a few Raiders fans.

Not every Raiders supporter has expressed disgust at seeing Gruden in Chiefs red, but some have. Here are a few examples that don’t involve curse words.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid was asked Wednesday about Gruden being at camp in St. Joseph and attending team meetings.

“Listen, he advises a lot of people, so he’s staying busy,” Reid said. “The grass isn’t growing under his feet, man, he’s rolling. I think he’s just going to keep doing that (advising) and hopefully he’s able to get back in (into the NFL) and get a head coaching job. (He’s) a phenomenal football coach, he’s touched everybody here. Both sides of the ball — special teams, he got to sit down in those meetings. (He’s) just a heck of a coach.”

Reid and Gruden have been friends for more than 30 years dating back to their days in Green Bay when they were assistants under Mike Holmgren.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has enjoyed having Gruden in camp.

“It’s always great to hear offensive minds and obviously someone that we’ve went up against, so you kind of can listen to the ways that (teams) were trying to go against us and combating stuff that we did well,” Mahomes told reporters Wednesday. “Then him (Gruden) and coach Reid have a long history and so just to hear them talk about old school football plays is always cool for me, being a football historian. It’s been fun to have him out here and just listen to him talk about football.”
