A round of late-day scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible Friday in the Kansas City area, but the stronger storms are expected to be south and west of the metro, according to the National Weather Service.

Before the storms fire up, “it will be another hot and humid day across Kansas and Missouri,” the weather service said.

Afternoon temperatures will rise into the lower 90s in the metro, a few degrees above what is normal for this time of year. Typically, Kansas City sees temperatures around 87 degrees in mid-August.

    Storms expected Friday night

Storms could impact your Friday night plans as they push through the metro area.

The weather service said scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible from eastern Kansas into west-central and southwest Missouri.

“The threat for severe weather is low, but not zero,” the weather service said. There could be a strong storm or two.

The weather service said that when storms develop, isolated instances of large hail and damaging winds could occur. The strongest storms are expected to be south and west of the metro.

In the immediate Kansas City area, there’s a slight chance — 20% — of rain from showers and thunderstorms. Skies will become mostly clear after the storms pass through.

    Kansas City weekend weather forecast

The hot and humid weather will give way to relatively nicer conditions over the weekend.

Cooler and drier air is expected to slowly filter into the area from the north on Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures will be around 88 degrees on Saturday and 85 on Sunday. The cooler weather will continue into next week, with temperatures in the low to mid-80s.
