This Kansas City-based ice cream shop is rapidly expanding. Yet another will open soon

Betty Rae’s Ice Cream , a Kansas City favorite, will open its newest location this week.

The shop will open Tuesday at 5330 W. 95th St. in Prairie Village, Betty Rae’s announced.

The first 50 customers in line will receive up to two free scoops of ice cream. Throughout the day, each customer can pile on up to three sauces and toppings at no extra charge.

Ten people who visit Tuesday through Thursday will be randomly chosen to win free ice cream for a year, up to one per week.

Betty Rae’s, which opened its original Kansas City location in 2016 at 7140 Wornall Road, sells 26 flavors of ice cream, including gooey butter cake and creme brulee.

The Prairie Village spot will be the company’s fifth in the Kansas City metro and its third in Johnson County.

On opening day, the shop will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. After that, its hours will be noon to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and noon to 10 p.m. Fridays through Saturdays.

The ice cream company’s Merriam location — which doubles as a test kitchen — opened last month at 5740 Antioch Road.

Betty Rae’s plans to open its first out-of-state location in Omaha, Nebraska, next month.

The wholesale portion of the business is also growing. In November, the company announced that its pints would be available in Cosentino-owned Price Chopper, SunFresh and Cosentino’s Markets stores. Fetterman’s, a deli in Platte City at 2405 N.W. Prairie View Road, began serving scoops of Betty Rae’s at the beginning of the year.

Betty Rae’s aggressive expansion began when Matt Shatto — owner of Shatto Milk Co. — bought the company last year and promised to open several more across the metro.

“We’re bringing a local concept that is really best in its class,” he previously told The Star.

Betty Rae’s has changed hands a few times since its inception. It was founded by David Friesen, who named the business after his grandmother.

Near Betty Rae’s Prairie Village spot is nonprofit ice cream shop The Golden Scoop, 9540 Nall Ave in Overland Park.

The Golden Scoop’s new spot, 10460 W. 103rd St., is now projected to open in September.
