Students visiting the Clarksville campus of Nashville State Community College should plan to add a few extra minutes to their commute times to accommodate construction.

College administrators were joined by city, county and state officials on May 15 as they broke ground on a new expansion and renovation project on campus.

The $34 million project will see the college's existing building completely renovated and add a second building and expanded parking to campus.

“From design to the programs and supports offered, we are confident that the community will be very pleased with the expansion and renovation,” said Clarksville campus Director Kathleen Akers. “Between Tennessee Promise, Tennessee Reconnect, the numerous scholarships offered, and supports provided such as laptop, tutoring, and food and transportation assistance, Nashville State is here to support students from admissions to graduation and beyond.”

According to its website, the Clarksville campus has 422 students enrolled. About 35% of those students are nontraditional and 18% use VA benefits.

Along with more student resources, the Clarksville campus is preparing for new academic programs in healthcare, information technology, secondary education and industrial process control.

Additional resources for students, as outlined in the college's plans, include:

    • Lounge dedicated to military veterans
    • Student lounge
    • Welcome Center
    • A new bookstore
    • Campus Cupboard food pantry
    • Testing space for industry certifications
    • ADA testing center
    • Library and study area
    • Tutoring support room

"This magnificent new building will be a great addition to the campus of Nashville State Community College, which is already a prominent fixture along Wilma Rudolph Boulevard," Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts said at the groundbreaking.

"Thank you to the Montgomery County delegation in the Tennessee General Assembly for securing funding from the state, and great thanks to the people of this community who have embraced the need to continue their education at a wonderful higher education institution like Nashville State."

The project is expected to be complete by early 2027.

Phase one, which includes construction of the new building, is expected to be complete by the end of 2025. Phase 2, which includes the total renovation of the existing building, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The project also includes new landscaping, grading and parking.
