LEXINGTON, KY – A federal criminal investigation, led by DEA Special Agent and local school board member Jason D. Moore, has uncovered a significant inventory of illegal substances and firearms, indicative of a major criminal enterprise in Fayette County. Eugene L. Fishback, 31, allegedly a key figure in the local drug trafficking network, was apprehended in the operation and is charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl on December 8.

According to a criminal complaint authored by Moore, the investigation unfolded over the span of nearly two months, from October to December 2023. The operation, marked by surveillance and strategic interventions, led the seizure of substantial quantities of drugs and firearms. The list of items confiscated is extensive:

    • 1,767 fentanyl pills
    • 1,020 grams of methamphetamine
    • 7.62 pounds of marijuana
    • 4 firearms
    • $25,610 in cash

The operation’s success hinged on a series of events, starting with an eviction at Stoney Brooke Apartments. This eviction inadvertently led to the discovery of an arsenal of drugs and weapons, unraveling the threads of Fishback’s alleged illicit network. Further investigations and traffic stops cemented the DEA’s case, culminating in the seizure of additional fentanyl pills from Fishback’s vehicle and his subsequent arrest, according to Moore’s complaint.

The pills were blue in color with the “M” marking on one side consistent with the other pills seized throughout the course of this investigation. It is affiant’s experience that these pills are consistent with counterfeit prescription pills known to contain fentanyl and fentanyl derivatives.

Moore, a DEA special agent and instructor, was recently appointed to fill the District 3 vacancy on the Fayette County Board of Education. Moore’s selection, following a process that included a closed interview with board members and participation in a student forum.

The District 3 seat, which encompasses the eastern section of Fayette County, including Hamburg, Chilesburg, and outbound Richmond Road, became vacant following the resignation of the previous board member, Tom Jones. Moore was chosen from a pool of 14 applicants.

Fishback is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Lexington Friday.
