SVVSD recognizes library “Dream Team”
Four St. Vrain Valley staff were awarded the Colorado’s Department of Education’s Highley Effective Schools Through Libraries, or HESTL, designation this week. The award was granted to Lesha Baker, Coal Ridge Middle School librarian, Kristin Holtz, librarian at Silver Creek High School. Holtz and Baker are among only 20 librarians in the state of Colorado to earn this distinction. They join Helen Robbins, Julie Singh, Jamie Nesbitt and LeAnne Kelly at SVVSD to earn the distinction.

Longmont City Council supports RTD TABOR exemption on Nov. ballot
On Tuesday, Longmont City Council voted to support the Regional Transportation District, or RTD, as it asks voters to extend its TABOR exemption in perpetuity. Erik Davidson, chair of the RTD board and District I representative, spoke to the city council in a personal capacity on Tuesday to advocate for support on an upcoming debrucing measure that will appear on the November ballot. District I represents Longmont, Broomfield, Lafayette, Erie and a small portion of Thorton.
Longmont City Council hears study on minimum wage increases
In 2019, the state of Colorado passed HB19-1210 which allows municipalities the ability to set their own minimum wage for employees. Last year, Boulder County opted to raise its minimum wage and invited its municipalities to join it. However, Longmont, Boulder, Lafayette, Louisville and the town of Erie opted not to increase the minimum wage until further information was gathered. On Tuesday night, the Longmont City Council heard the findings of a study on the economic impacts of raising the minimum wage.
SVVSD showcases public education in a parade
An idea to showcase St. Vrain Valley School District’s many programs began in Berlin and has morphed into a parade that will march down Main Street on Sept. 7. The first Public Education parade idea was born after Carrie Adams, program director at Silver Creek Leadership Academy, attended the Global Leadership Summit in Berlin a few years ago. She was there with a group of students and ran into Superintendent Don Haddad. Happy Days Plants focuses on higher mission
Jessica Birmingham opened Happy Days Plants in Nov. 2021 with a dream to employ as many adults with disabilities as possible. The store was inspired by her daughter, Bailey, who was diagnosed with Down syndrome. When Bailey graduated from high school, she was ready to enter the workforce. According to Birmingham, Bailey struggled to find a job due to a lack of opportunities available in the community. So Birmingham opened Happy Days Plants. In early August, Birmingham announced that the retail store transitioned from a for-profit to a nonprofit.

Nepali Jatra is an annual cultural celebration held at Downtown Longmont, Colorado on July 20th (Saturday) from 5 to 7 pm. A movie screening is at 3pm which will be publicized later. This event serves as a platform to showcase the diverse and vibrant culture of Nepal. Attendees are treated to a spectacle of color and tradition as participants are adorned with intricate jewelry and a variety of colorful attires reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the country.
