The Alabama Board of Pardons and Parole met Aug. 7 and denied parole to a repeat offender serving time for an attempted theft in Crenshaw County.

The board voted to deny parole to David Alan Powell, 37, who is serving a five-year sentence for third-degree escape alongside a 32-month sentence for possessing/receiving a controlled substance, Class D. Powell is housed at the Staton Correctional Center and has served six months of his sentence for the March 6 convictions.

Powell’ mother, Karen Morgan, addressed the Board to support his release. The Board voted to deny his parole with a reset date of January 2025.

The board heard 23 parole petitions on Aug. 7, granting four and denying 19.

The board also held seven pardon hearings, granting three and denying four.
