    Teeing off: The first Fantastic Five of the fall sports season focuses on golfers

    Welcome back. While the high school sports season won't get into full swing until after Labor Day , these golfers proved they're already in midseason form . Our first Fantastic Five of the Fall focuses on the links. Here's who stood out in the opening few days of competition this week:

    Jason Drake & Gavin Shipos, Medway golf

    They each cared a 40 to share the medalist honors in a 264-275 win over Millis at Maplegate Country Club on Wednesday. Millis' Aidan Sugrue also shot a 40.

    Coby Erlich, Westborough golf

    He shot a 1-over 37 at home to help the Rangers win their opener Tuesday. They qualified for the state tournament last season .

    Connor Griffin, Blackstone Valley Tech golf

    The senior hit par with a 36 at Highfield Country Club on Tuesday. The Beavers defeated Monty Tech 162-174 in a matchup of last seasons co-Colonial Athletic League champs. BVT's Santiago Hernandez and Leopaul Gamlin each shot a 40.

    Colin Haynes, Hopedale golf

    He earned medalist honors in the Blue Raiders' opener Tuesday with a 35 at Hopedale Country Club. Hopedale defeated Maynard 169-173.

    James Hayward, Hopkinton golf

    The junior shot a 1-under par 35 to earn the medalist honors in his first ever varsity match Wednesday, a 241-286 victory over Ashland at Hopkinton Country Club.
