An Appalachian State football practice saw a player rip off his teammate's helmet and hit him with it in a shocking turn of events.

In leaked training footage, an 11 vs. 11 play descended into chaos after the No. 12 pass rusher got locked horns with the No. 73 blocker. The pair got into a shoving match before the black jersey-wearing pass rusher grabbed his teammate's helmet so hard he pulled it off.

He then swung the helmet at his college football teammate's head. According to TMZ Sports , the player has not been identified - but he has been disciplined internally, with the football program's head coach condemning the ordeal. "This behavior is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated within the App State football program," head coach Shawn Clark said.

Fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to react to the viral clip. "That’s a lawsuit if I’ve ever seen one," one said. "The offensive lineman didn’t even do anything. Say goodbye to your career bud," another tweeted. "Dude should be arrested. Assault with a deadly weapon. Could have killed him if he hit the right spot," a third reacted.

A fourth added: "He should be kicked off the team, kicked out of school and criminally charged. He could've killed a person hitting them like that!"

Appalachian State will be hoping the preseason scrap isn't a foreshadowing of things to come in 2024 for the football program. They head into the new season off the back of a 9-5 record in 2023. They earned second overall in the Sunbelt East Division and also won the Avocados From Mexico Cure Bowl.

Similar scenes have been seen in the NFL in years gone by. Myles Garrett and Mason Rudolph got into it in 2019, resulting in the former ripping the latter's helmet off and swinging for him.

The NFL has already seen its fair share of training bust-ups this summer. New York Giants' new star wide receiver, Malik Nabers, was at the center of scuffles during a joint practise with the Detroit Lions. "Someone comes up running to me, says a few words, the rest is that," Nabers said.

"It was a heated practice," Nabers said. "Words are being said and stuff like that is going to happen."

"[We] talked about cleaning a few things up that led to some of those things," Brian Daboll added before a second day of fights erupted. "We'll try to do a better job [Tuesday], but both sides were competitive, got a lot out of it."
