A man has been shot dead by police as he was fatally stabbing his own mother in a street.

The man has been identified as 37-year-old Paul Parvea Montazer who had launched an attack on his 72-year-old mother Parvin Montazer outside a home in Irvine, Southern California. Officers had been called to the quiet residential home on Thursday afternoon following reports of a man chasing a woman with a knife.

When officers arrived to the scene in the area of Green Tree and Coral Tree they were reportedly advanced on by the man, from Las Vegas, with an outstretched knife before he was shot dead. Kyle Oldoerp, spokesman for Irvine police said: "This is a tragic situation, and our hearts go out to all involved."

The intruder tried to get inside via an open window adjacent to the back yard. There was a woman inside that room at the time, and a male occupant was also in the home.

Police spokesperson Heather Mitchell said in a statement: “The suspect threw a rock at a male resident of the home, striking him in the face. The male resident retrieved a firearm and shot the suspect.”

The homeowner, 54, fired three shots, one in his chest. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after and attempted CPR on the intruder, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the San Diego Union-tribune.

Mitchell said the homeowner suffered injuries to his face and was treated at the scene.
