    Everything that happened at Disney's D23 - cancelation fears to huge film announcements

    On Friday, Disney aficionados gathered in California for D23, the biennial convention hosted by the megacorporation .

    About 12,000 fans were in the audience at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and were given light up bracelets to help set the fun atmosphere. Celebrities made appearances like director James Cameron, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Lindsay Lohan , Jamie Lee Curtis, and more.

    At the convention, Disney showcases what it has in store across its brands. Here's what was announced during this year's event

    Third installment of Avatar

    James Cameron's Avatar was a blockbuster hit in 2009. A sequel was eventually released in 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water, and fans are finally getting a third installment.

    The director appeared with Avatar stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington to share the release date and title of the new film - Avatar: Fire and Ash will be out December 19, 2025. James said it was "too soon" to share footage of the film, but gave a few hints about what fans could expect.

    "There are new cultures and settings and creatures, and new biomes," he said, "You will see a lot more of Pandora, the planet, that you've never seen before."

    After taking the world by storm, Baby Yoda aka Grogu will get his own film with Pedro Pascal titled The Mandalorian and Grogu. Director Jon Favreau shared that filming began a few weeks ago.

    Season two of Andor will include fan favorites like Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), and the droid K-2S0 (Alan Tudyk). Star Wars fans also got a teaser trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, a series that will star Jude Law.

    Blade cancelation fears

    There have been rumors that Marvel's Blade will be getting canceled. The film still has no writer or director and there was no news about the highly-anticipated project at D23.

    Fans quickly took to Threads to share their annoyance. One person wrote: "Disappointed there was no Blade news at D23." Another agreed: "Such a disappointment. I wish we had more clarity about what is going on with that project."

    A third fan fumed: "With the popularity of Deadpool & Wolverine you would think we would have got a taste of something," while another added: "Girl you know that movie is dead …"

    Marvel TV shows

    Actress Kathryn Hahn led the cast of Agatha All Along in a musical number before unveiling a new trailer for the show that premieres in September. Another television show, Daredevil: Born Again is set to debut in March 2025 and they're about to film season two.

    Ironheart will also get her own show, who first debuted in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The show has been in the works since 2022, with the first announcement at that year's D23.

    Sequels

    Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, who starred in the 2003 film Freaky Friday, made an appearance at D23 to promote the film's sequel Freakier Friday which is set to be released in 2025. They confirmed actors Chad Michael Murray and Mark Harmon would return to reprise their roles from the original film.

    Pixar's chief creative officer, Pete Docter, told fans that The Incredibles 3 was in the works, following the original 2004 film and its 2018 sequel. Writer and director Brad Bird, who also voices the famous Edna Mode character, will be returning.

    Frozen will have two more films in the series, with Frozen 3 slated for 2027. A new Tron film staring Jared Leto, Evan Peters, and Greta Lee will be called Tron: Ares and its soundtrack will be composed by Nine Inch Nails.

    Other sequels that were showcased include Zootopia 2, Moana 2, and Toy Story 5. The last of which has been described as toys vs technology as Buzz Lightyear and Woody face a generation of iPad children.

    Live action reboots

    The official trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King was released. The film gives a look into the rise of Simba's father Mufasa and his adopted brother Scar.

    A teaser trailer for the live-action Snow White was released. Starring Hunger Games' Rachel Zegler, she can be heard in the trailer whistling the iconic 1937 film song Whistle While You Work.

    Fans were also treated to the first look of Stitch from the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch reboot set for Summer 2025.
