A Massachusetts man 's stop to pick up a birthday gift for his friend saw him become $4million richer when he won the lottery .

Robert J. Ostrye Jr, from New Bedford, told lottery officials he'd gone to a liquor store to buy a birthday present when he decided to purchase a lottery ticket too. Robert selected a $10 Monopoly Doubler scratch-off ticket.

He the discovered he'd won the $4million top prize. The lottery winner chose the cash option when claiming his prize, meaning he received a one-time lump sum of $2.6million before taxes.

Robert revealed he plans to use his new fortune to carry out some renovations on his home. He also intends to use the money to help others.

His winning ticket was purchased at Jay’s Wine & Spirits, 446 Dartmouth St. The store will also receive a $40,000 bonus for selling the ticket.

According to lottery officials, there are still two $4million jackpots that are yet to be claimed. Robert's lottery win comes as another Massachusetts player won a $1million a year for life prize from a ticket they were gifted for their birthday.

The winner chose to remain anonymous and collect their prize last month through Merjon Tangovan Nominee Trust of Boston, represented by trustee Greg Racki. Greg told lottery officials his client said the winning ticket was "the best birthday present ever".

It marked the first $1 million a year for life prize won in the Massachusetts State Lottery's new $50 scratch ticket game, which was launched in February. The grand prize was won on a Lifetime Millions scratch ticket game.

Winners of the grand prize can either elect to receive $1million every year for the rest of their lives for a minimum of 20 years or claim $15.4 million in cash up front.
