Brooks Koepka shows true colors with 'horrible majors' comment at LIV Golf event

Brooks Koepka has opened up on his struggles at the major championships this season, describing his form at the four flagship events as 'horrible'.

Koepka impressed throughout the 2023 campaign, winning twice on the LIV circuit in Jeddah and Orlando, as well as adding his fifth major title at the PGA Championship at Oak Hill. Despite adding LIV win No. 3 in Singapore in March this year, Koepka has been far from the form he had shown in the season prior.

He showed a glimmer of his 2023 self during the opening round of LIV Greenbrier on Friday, after the five-time major champion carded an impressive six-under-par 64 to leave him shot behind leaders, Jason Kokrak, Sebastian Munoz, and Talor Gooch.

In spite of the improvement, Koepka was keen to highlight his 2024 struggles post-round, highlighting his major form in particular. “This year has not been great,” he said. “This year has been actually very disappointing. I haven't played anywhere what I want to play.

"Played absolutely horrible in all the majors and only won once out here, so that's not anywhere where I want it.” Looking at the 2024 major record, Koepka made all four cuts on the big stage, however, his high standards are clear to see having failed to really make his mark on the leaderboard.

He kicked off his major season with a tie for 45th at the Masters, before back-to-back tied-26th finishes at the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open followed. His final hunt for a sixth major win this year came at The Open Championship last month, but once again failed to stamp his authority, finishing tied-43rd.

There are of course plenty of positives for the Smash GC star in West Virginia this week following his impressive start on Friday. Koepka will no doubt be keen to strengthen his spot in the individual standings with one regular season event to come after Greenbrier.

The former PGA Tour star currently sits 10th in the Order of Merit list, backing up his win in Singapore with three top-10 finishes throughout the season. In the team standings, Koepka's Smash setup finds themselves seventh in the list, with the season-ending Team Championship approaching.

In West Virginia, they find themselves in a strong spot at the top after the opening 18 holes. Quizzed on his thoughts on booking an automatic bye in this month's Team Championship with a strong showing this week, he replied: "I don't think we're thinking about that.

"I think everybody up here is thinking, go play good and go win individually, and at the end of the day, if all four of us have a chance to win, we should be pretty good. It's not anything -- at least I'm not thinking about. Yeah, it would be nice to clinch that, but also we want to finish as high as we can. I don't know if it's possible to even finish first. I doubt that. But just finish the year strong and on a high note."
