'My friend named her daughter after an STD after making Greek mythology mistake'

A woman has been left gobsmacked after her friend made a 'catastrophic' baby name mistake. She explained her friend is five months pregnant and is starting to brainstorm names for her firstborn daughter.

Wanting her friends' opinions on the monikers, she invited them to her house to hear the ones on their shortlist. On Reddit , the woman said: "She's having a girl and likes to run some of her ideas by our friend group to see what we think.

"Yesterday, we all got together to hang out and she told us her latest favorite. Chlamydia. Before I had time to get over my shock, she started going on about how ever since we had to read The Odyssey in high school , she's always liked her in Greek mythology.

"It takes a minute but from the context she gives in the conversation, I figure out that she's talking about Clytemnestra (if you don't know and don't want to search, she's the wife of King Agamemnon and sister of Helen of Troy). So I interrupt her and go, 'Wait, you mean Clytemnestra not Chlamydia. Right?' And she's all, 'No, I meant Chlamydia.'"

In an attempt to save her from making an 'awful' mistake, she explained chlamydia is an STD and not a figure from Greek mythology. She added: "After I bring up a Google search to prove my point, she gets all awkward and quiet. The mood for the rest of our time together kind of soured."

But when she returned home, her pregnant friend started lightening up her phone with angry text messages, condemning her for "embarrassing her in front of everyone." The woman added: "She says I could have brought it up in private and didn't need to be so condescending about it. She was just talking about a name she liked and I made her feel like an idiot.

"I ignored the text because she was kind of being an idiot. She just went based on a decade-old memory of a book we read in high school and mixed up the name with a common STD. A simple Google search before getting so attached to the name would have solved the problem before there was one."

Jumping to the pregnant friend's defense, her other friends started criticizing her for shooting down her favorite baby name. But she argued they're even worse friends for watching on and saying nothing all while knowing it could ruin the child's life.

Wanting to know whether she was in the wrong, she added: "I don't think I have anything to apologize for, and besides, they were perfectly happy to sit there and let her think her std baby name would be a good choice. Imagine how embarrassed she would have been after she found the mistake later and realized that none of her friends had the decency to tell her the truth.

"But I feel like I'm the only one on my side, so am I really the a***hole here?" Commenting on her post, one user said: "Once upon a time, I legitimately thought 'Fellatio' was a character from Romeo and Juliet . And I can't even blame baby brain, so."

Another user added: "Clytemnestra? Not sure if I wouldn’t prefer to be Chlamydia." A third user said: "Candida is an actual girl's name, though it's very rarely used these days (likely for obvious reasons). Candice still remains reasonably in use."
