Jordan Spieth has decided to undergo surgery in the offseason after his 2024 PGA Tour campaign ended on Sunday.

Spieth's performance this year has been less than stellar, a trend that continued at the opening FedEx Cup playoff event in Memphis last week. The three-time major champion finished the FedEx St. Jude Championship tied for second-bottom with Rory McIlroy , ending the event at nine-over-par.

This disappointing performance marked the end of his season , as he failed to break into the top-50 of the FedEx Cup standings, excluding him from this week's BMW Championship.

Now, it's back to the drawing board for Spieth, who hasn't managed to finish inside the top-10 of a PGA Tour event since tying for 10th place at the Valero Texas Open in April. This slump has seen him drop to 43rd in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), a significant fall from ending 2023 inside the top-15.

A persistent wrist injury has been a major obstacle for Spieth this year. Despite trying various treatments during the season, the American golfer has now revealed that he will resort to surgery to address the issue.

"I've got to have it operated on ASAP, and then I'll go through the process of what I'm supposed to do from there," Spieth said on Sunday. Regarding a potential timeline for his return to the sport, he made it clear: "If I don't have a reason to try to rush back - which I don't - I'll probably just take it as slow as I can."

Spieth noted that while it has been problematic, pain hasn't been the main contributor to his fluctuating performance levels. He added: "I kept trying not to make excuses for myself because it didn't hurt when I was swinging.

"But it doesn't seem coincidental based on the amount of time, and really the results being the exact same every single week. So I'm very hopeful. I think there's some clarity in getting it done," adding, "There's also some uncertainty, and so it's a little scary. But also, if I can learn to find some patience - which I'm not very good at doing - then I think I could come back stronger."

Confronting an arduous season riddled with form slumps and injury woes, Spieth didn't hide his exasperation. The golf star, currently ranked 43rd in the world, reflected, "I put a lot on my own plate and then had some unfortunate circumstances, too."
