LIV Golf stars set for awkward relegation scrap in major problem for Dustin Johnson

Both Pat Perez and Harold Varner III are set for an awkward final LIV Golf event in Chicago, with the two 4Aces teammates battling to beat the drop from the breakaway league.

With just one event left to play, the battle to avoid relegation is heating up, and Perez and Varner III find themselves in the thick of it. Sadly for captain Dustin Johnson and the 4Aces team though, only one could well survive with just 54 holes of the campaign remaining.

As things stand in the individual standings, both Perez and Harold Varner III find themselves on the right side of the drop zone line, despite the former beginning last week's event at Greenbrier in a relegation spot.

Currently, there are seven players inside the drop zone. Three of these however are exempt from being dumped from the Saudi-backed circuit though, one being Bubba Watson thanks to his role as RangeGoats captain. Elsewhere, Anthony Kim and Hudson Swafford will not be a part of the four relegated stars due to being wildcard members.

This leaves brothers Kieran and Scott Vincent, as well as Branden Grace and Kalle Samooja facing elimination from the league. Things could however all change with one event left to play. Perez and Varner III both occupy the two spots above the dreaded drop.

The pair will find themselves in the awkward situation of playing both for their team, whilst also attempting to better each other to ensure they do not slip into the relegation zone. Captain Johnson finds himself a long way from the drop zone battle but will be as interested as anyone on the outcome.

He of course will see two of his teammates battle it out against each other with the risk of either one, or even both falling into one of the four dumping spots. Perez's time with the 4Aces and LIV as a whole almost came to an end last campaign, after ending the year in free agency.

Fortunately for the former PGA Tour star, his performances in the two seasons previous saw him recalled by Johnson, after being offered a new contract extension. “Couldn’t be more excited,” Perez said after being handed his to remain with the breakaway league “It’s phenomenal to remain a part of LIV. I’m very grateful."

Outlining his aims for this year, he added: "I want to see my teammates do well, too. Sure, I’d like to play well, win one of these things or at least have a look at it. But I want the team to win a bunch and then win the team championship, and then hopefully be a part of the team again in 2025.”

The relegation of Varner III meanwhile would no doubt prove a shock to many. Just last season, the 34-year-old was a LIV Golf winner, claiming the $4 million in Washington D.C.. For 2024 he was recruited by Johnson, having been involved in a trade with Peter Uihlein, who moved in the opposite direction to the RangeGoats.
