Josh Allen contract comments speak volumes after being overtaken by NFL rivals

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has spoken about his current contract after seeing other NFL quarterbacks sign more lucrative deals.

Allen signed a six-year, $258million extension in 2021 as he became the second-highest annual paid star in the NFL. But fast forward three years and the 28-year-old is no longer in the same place in the list after seeing fellow quarterbacks signing new and improved deals.

His current contract numbers appear to suggest he’s underpaid by quarterback standings, with his $43m average per year now ranking Allen 13th among his positional rivals. Allen’s $100m guarantee is now the 11th highest in total and the total value of his deal places him in sixth.

Allen discussed his contract situation with WIVB where he admitted that he isn’t overly caught up on the situation of players surrounding him, insisting he’s content with his current position. “Listen, everyone’s going to have their day. I’m happy that everyone’s getting what they’re worth, right? And I think that as the game progresses and guys keep getting paid, the market is the market.

“I’ve got no problem with where I’m at right now. And, you know what, I had my day a couple years ago, and I’m sure someday I’ll have it again. But I think the main thing is the main thing, and that’s playing football to the best of my ability, and everything else will take care of itself.”

Allen’s pay over the next three years is also damning, with him said to receive the 20th most money in the NFL through the 2026 season at just over $95m. In companions, Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson tops the list at over $155m, while less accomplished quarterbacks Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence, Kirk Cousins and Kyler Murray are all paid more in annual average.

Three non-quarterbacks – San Francisco 49ers edge Nick Bosa, Minnesota Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson and Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones are all ahead of Allen on the list. Despite leading the Bills to a fifth straight playoff appearance in 2023, Allen doesn’t appear to be too hung up on his contract.

Allen’s reply echoed what Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning qb Patrick Mahomes said previously when he was asked a similar question. Despite their difference in the way that Allen and Mahomes’ deal is structured there are parallels between their deals and both have witnessed lower credential quarterbacks pass them in some financial aspects of their deals.

"I know every time a contract comes up, everybody looks at my APY (average per year) and everything like that," Mahomes said in July. "I'm doing pretty well myself. For me, it's just about going out there trying to win football games, trying to make money for my family at the end of the day. I feel like I'm doing a great job of that."
