Texas attorney breaks record for world's widest tongue - but won't show her colleagues

A Texas attorney has been awarded the title of female with the world's widest tongue - measuring a whopping 7.9cm (3.11in) at its widest point.

Brittany Lacayo’s tongue is wider than a hockey puck and almost as wide as a credit card. It is 2.5cm wider than it is long. Brittany, who works as an attorney, had been keeping her massive tongue a secret from her colleagues but they're likely to find out about it soon as she's clinched a Guinness World Record .

It marks the first time the record has been broken in a decade, the previous record holder was fellow American Emily Schlenker, who was awarded the title as a teenager with her tongue measuring 7.33cm (2.89in) wide.

Brittany revealed she's always had a huge tongue and her family would often joke about it when she was a child. But she hadn't considered it could be record-breaking until a friend sent her a video of Emily Schlenker.

Realizing she may have a wider tongue, the video prompted Brittany to measure it. She submitted the required measurements to Guinness World Records, which keeps a database of around 40,000 world records.

In February they verified that Brittany was the new record holder by a margin of 0.57cm (0.22in). The attorney said most people react with "shock" and "curiosity" when she shows them her tongue for the first time.

“It is neat and kind of funny,” she admitted. She still hasn't told her colleagues about her new record yet.

The title of male with the widest tongue in the world belongs to Brian Thompson. When measured in La Cañada, California, USA, on 30 July 2018 it came in at 8.88 cm (3.49 in) at its widest point.

Brian's tongue measures 9.32 cm in length from the front of the teeth to the tip of the tongue. The previous male record holder to the widest tongue was Byron Schlenker, Emily’s dad.
