Last week a 12-year-old girl has been left critically injured after being accidentally ran over by her own mom on her first day of school.

The youngster was hit by the vehicle at around 7:45 a.m. after her school backpack and other belongings rolled under her mom’s Lincoln Navigator outside Booker Middle School in Sarasota, Florida. The girl then reportedly crawled under the SUV to retrieve her belongings as her mother drove away.

Highway Patrol Trooper Kenn Watson told ABC Action News that the mother "immediately stopped when she heard her child scream." The girl was airlifted to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg where she was said to be in a critical condition.

Watson added: "We’re hoping this does not happen again, but we have to remember to have that good spatial awareness when you are anywhere around a school zone and most certainly when you are letting your kid out of your vehicle. This is a tragedy that 100% could have been avoided by simply paying a little more attention and not being in a hurry,”

Booker Middle School offered counselling for students affected by the traumatic scene, with principal Lashawn Frost urging parents to “follow the designated drop-off procedures,”.

In a separate vehicle-involved tragedy last week, nine family members, including six children, who were killed in a 'catastrophic' SUV crash had been on their way home from a family matriarch's 80th birthday party when the vehicle overturned into a canal.
