New York Giants fans make feelings clear on Tommy DeVito as cut threat looms

New York Giants fans appear to be in agreement when it comes to Tommy DeVito remaining on the roster ahead of Tuesday's roster-cutting deadline.

On Tuesday, teams must significantly trim their rosters from 90 to 53, meaning 37 players from each team in a total of 1,184 who will become free agents in the hopes of being picked up elsewhere and continuing their NFL careers.

DeVito is one player who is undoubtedly on the bubble, with the Giants already having Daniel Jones under contract as their starter and paying Drew Lock a significant contract to be their back-up quarterback - with teams regularly only carrying two players at the position.

The beloved figure was given the entire preseason game against the New York Jets to essentially show off his talents to not only the Giants, but other teams who may be looking for a backup this season.

Despite the team scoring just six points, DeVito had impressive moments in the game, completing 14 of his 27 passes for 103 yards and rushing for 48 yards - but took too many sacks while not being helped by a struggling offensive line in front of him.

With Jones and Lock not figuring in the game, it does appear that the writing is on the wall for DeVito - but Giants fans almost consensually hope that he sticks around.

One said: "I would keep DeVito Lock has proved what he isn't, and the fans love DeVito. 3-3 record as a rookie a positive INT/TD ratio on a bad team is worth another look."

As another fan added: "If they cut him, it will be added to the long line of stupid decisions the giants have made over the years...and I have suffered through a lot of them. Keep him and get rid of lock."

A third fan bemoaned the Giants roster decisions over the past 12 months, insinuating they'd be making another by cutting DeVito. He said: "The Giants have made a habit of bad decisions including letting go of Barkley. The way things are going, you can almost count them out for being a contender in the NFC East before they play the first down in the first game of the season."

Earlier this week, DeVito told reporters he's confident in his abilities and knows he has a place in the league should his hometown team choose not to retain him.

He said: "It’s not in my hands. So for me, it’s just to continue, every time I’m out on the field, show why I proved really to myself, first and foremost, that I belong somewhere in the NFL."
