Aaron Gordon honors late brother with heartfelt NBA jersey change

Denver Nuggets power forward Aaron Gordon will change his jersey number from No. 50 to No. 32 after three seasons . The move will honor his late brother, who wore the number before passing away in May.

An NBA numerologist reported the ongoing list of jersey number changes on social media, focusing on the Nuggets. Outside of Gordon's jersey change, second-year forward Hunter Tyson will pass his No. 4 number to the newly acquired Russel Westbrook, who signed a two-year deal with the franchise during the offseason.

Gordon's number swap comes just three months after his brother passed away . Drew was involved in a two-vehicle crash on the outskirts of Oregon, near Portland. He was driving a three-wheeled vehicle with a single wheel in the back and two in the back. It was called a Vanderhall Carme, similar to an elongated Polaris Slingshot.

Drew's vehicle was said to have crossed the middle of an interception but collided with a GMC Sierra pickup truck. Gordon was pronounced dead at the scene when the police arrived, who also reported that drugs or alcohol were not involved. The driver and passenger of the pickup truck were transported to the hospital but were released without any life-threatening injuries.

Aaron previously honored his brother's passing on Instagram with a post that was captioned, "Big bruh lives thru me," followed by a black heart emoji. He commemorated his brother's honor by getting his initials tattooed on his chest, fixed on the head of a gorilla.

The Nuggets also showed additional support for their forward on social media. On X, they wrote, "Our hearts are with Aaron and the Gordon family during this extremely difficult time."

Drew Gordon was the 9th-ranked power forward and the 24th-best high school basketball prospect in the class of 2008. He played at Archbishop Mitty High School, averaging 13.1 points and 9.7 rebounds. Drew wore the No. 32 throughout his college basketball career at New Mexico. He played his final two seasons with the Lobos, where he logged 818 points, 69 blocks, and 661 rebounds.

Before transferring to New Mexico, he started his college career in the Pac-10 with UCLA. He received offers from Arizona, Cal, and Washington as a top recruit before settling with the Bruins. But, he struggled to find game time as a starter at UCLA, ultimately leading to his transfer in 2010. Although projected to be a second-round draft pick, after college, Drew went undrafted but accepted a summer league slot with the Dallas Mavericks in 2012.

The team didn't pick him up, so he took a Euroleague offer with Partizan Belgrade in Serbia instead. His international stint led to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2014. He played nine games for the 76ers during the 2014-15 season before more international seasons in Lithuania, Poland, and Japan.
