Star Wars Outlaws: The good and the bad about the first open-world Star Wars game

Ubisoft's latest video game Star Wars Outlaws , set for release later this week on August 30, has some trilogy enthusiasts excited while others are prepared for a big let down.

Ubisoft is notorious for leading gamers on with its reveal trailers, which usually showcase graphics, mechanics and story bits that don't make it into the full game. Thankfully, outlaws seems to contain everything promised but sadly stops there. Don't get me wrong, the early-access reviews gives the game props for what it does right, but the trailer polished certain elements like many expected.

If you're looking to purchase the game, here's everything you need to know, the good and the bad, about the latest Star Wars adventure that essentially has you playing as a female Han Solo .

    Release and Platforms

The game will release Friday, August 30 for the Playstation 5, Xbox Series X and PC. No one will be left out in purchasing this Star Wars adventure.

    Open-world

One of the biggest selling points of the game is that it's the first-ever Star Wars open world game. Players can go anywhere, anytime they want—given the game follows standard open-world practices.

The player will trek across focused maps and areas that are relevant to the story: some places will be familiar to die-hard Star Wars fans and others will be entirely new. The map will be besieged by storm troopers as the story occurs between episode 2 The Empire Strikes Back and episode 3 Return of the Jedi.

There is also Toshara, which is a new moon setting in the Star Wars Universe. The gameplay trailer suggested we would be able to board our ship and takeoff straight into space—no loading screen required. That hasn't been seen or mentioned in new trailers or reviews but I'm pretty sure we were all skeptical.

It's unclear whether we'll see Han Solo in his vegetative state at any point in the game, Star Wars fans know the game takes place after Han was captured by space mob boss Jabba the Hutt for unpaid debt. However, we do know we'll be visiting the criminal's home planet during our adventure across the Outer Rim in Tatooine as the player encounters multiple other crime organizations.

Other worlds include the frozen lands of Kijimi, the jungle planet Akiva, and Kay Vess', the main protagonist, home world of Cantonica with its casino city, Canto Bight.

    Story

The aforementioned main character Kay Vess is basically a female version of Han Solo: a scrappy galactic thief trying to survive in a world overrun by the Empire. Reviewers like those at IGN spoke positively about the plot, but it seems to be inspired by the likes of Ocean's Eleven.

Kay wants to pull off the biggest heist in her outlaw career and must assemble a team of the most-skilled criminals across the galaxy while evading the grip of the Empire, the crime syndicates and the ghosts of her past. The plan is to secure enough credits so Kay can run and start a new life out of crime.

    Gameplay

The game pulls certain crime and shooting elements from titles like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. First, there is a crime system that tracks the players wanted level. The nature of your crimes and misdeeds will raise the price on your head and yield the appropriate amount of storm troopers and bounty hunters.

The shooting looks decent and the sound of laser guns going off will be music to any Star War fan's ears. However, it seems very similar to Tom Clancy's: The Division, an open-world looter shooter. Yes, there are creative missions in the game and fun side missions poised to leave you surprised more often than not. But, based off gameplay shown in reviews and trailers, Kay seems very stiff when she shoots and there aren't any fun maneuvers she can do like slide and shoot.

Not to mention the graphics are a little lackluster. Graphics aren't everything in a game, but if you're going to sprinkle red barrels everywhere on the map at least make the explosions look decent. Hence The Division reference.
