Mom slammed over name that will give her baby a 'lifetime of ridicule' in last minute decision

A mother was cautioned that her young son might endure a "lifetime of ridicule" after she made a last-minute decision to change his name in honor of her late father.

The mom shared that she and her husband, married for 10 years, recently welcomed their first child. They had initially planned to name their son Louis, a name both had agreed upon. However, during her pregnancy, she experienced the unexpected loss of her father, Harry. To honor him, she chose to name her son Harry instead of Louis. Since she had taken her husband’s last name, Potter, t heir son’s full name became Harry Potter.

"I decided not to let the book series and movies affect my emotions or decision," she explained. "So, my lovely little boy with big blue eyes and bright-red hair is named Harry Michael Potter."

After posting a photo of her son along with the birth announcement on Facebook, she began receiving significant ridicule and criticism for her choice of name. She said, "My husband and I love the name, and there’s no question about keeping it, but I'm at the point where I’m considering asking my husband if he would mind changing Harry’s last name to my maiden name, so he’d be Harry Michael Vaughn. I think he would agree since he’s getting frustrated too."

Seeking advice on Reddit, one commenter warned, "If you think you’re being ridiculed, it’s nothing compared to what your son will face." Another added, "This kid will be teased his entire life. He’ll have to constantly clarify that yes, that’s his real name. You’re considering your feelings about the name but not how it will affect him throughout his life. I’m not saying this makes you a bad person, and I understand why you want it, but why not make Harry a second middle name?"

After considering the feedback, the mom decided to change their son’s surname from Potter to Vaughn, and her husband is opting to change his surname to Vaughn-Potter to align with hers.
