In April, police in Bordeaux shot and killed a knife-wielding man who had stabbed one person to death and injured another. The incident took place at the reflecting pool by the Garonne river's banks in the southwest port city on Wednesday at 7:50 p.m. According to a police source who spoke to AFP, the stabbing was probably "a brawl with an unknown motive" and had "no terrorist connotation for the moment."

According to France's BFMTV, both of the stabbing victims were males of Algerian heritage, and the injured man's condition is still unstable.

“The quays of Bordeaux, the beating heart of our city, are this evening struck by death,” France’s public accounts minister Thomas Cazenave, who also serves as a municipal and metropolitan counsellor in Bordeaux, wrote on X in French. “I think of the victims, the police officers who intervened and of all of us, Bordelais moved by this tragedy.” Neither the knifeman's religious background nor any religious motivation for the crime have been mentioned by officials.

The event happened on the same day as Eid al-Fitr, a celebration commemorating the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Nevertheless, according to French publication Sud Ouest, the knifeman allegedly accused his two victims of having consumed alcohol during the incident.

Another Algerian man, Mohamed, told the source that he was partying with one of the victims that morning beneath the city's neighboring Bir-Hakeim gate and that he later heard the victim battle with the alleged assailant. “It was our friend Daoud who was killed,” he said in French in an interview with the publication. “There are sometimes knife fights,” he added, “but this time it went too far. We never imagined this could happen.

An additional eyewitness reported to the publication that they saw cops shoot a man brandishing a knife.
