In a harrowing tragedy , a pair of twin 3-year-old sisters died after drowning in a pool at their family's apartment complex — mere months after their brother died of an illness.

Tragedy struck a Texas apartment complex earlier this week after twin sisters Elena Lalnun and Glory Ram were found unconscious underwater at the complex's pool. A maintenance worker discovered them and reportedly pulled them out of the water, dialing 911 as they did so.

But it was too late for the girls — one was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. Life-saving measures proved ineffective.

The police were called to the pool at Ridgeview Apartments in Sherman, Texas, a small city about 65 miles north of Dallas near the state's border with Oklahoma, on Wednesday just before noon, CBS News reported.

Now, a criminal investigation is underway as the authorities attempt to determine what happened and how the girls were able to make their way into the pool area, which is located on the 1800 block of West Washington Street.

Carrie Curry, an eyewitness to the discovery, told the Daily Mail that she saw one of the girls floating while the other was at the bottom of the pool. One had been wearing a pink blouse and a diaper, she said, as she added that she was shocked either of them managed to make their way into the pool area, which is usually closed off, latched shut behind a gate.

The girls were identified by the Lungmili Post, a Myanmar newspaper based in Boise, Idaho, that provides news to the large Burmese community there and across the U.S. The publication reported that the girls' brother died earlier in the year from an illness, the nature of which wasn't specified, as the publication cited an anonymous source close to the family.

Grayson Chin Baptist, a local church, reportedly held the service for the twins on Thursday as the Sherman Burmese community posted tributes to the girls on social media. The twins aren't the only young people to die by drowning in North Texas this year, either.

It was reported that a 21-year-old man died after attempting to rescue a distressed teenage girl at Lake Waxahachie. Then, a 28-year-old Serbian athlete died competing in the Crossfit Games in Fort Worth.

After that, a middle-aged man died after jumping into the Trinity River to save a child, and then a 6-year-old boy perished after he was rescued from a pool in Tarrant County. Health officials and other authorities are urging parents and caregivers specifically to be mindful of safety amid the heightened drowning occurrences.
