Princess gives up her Royal privileges to marry a 'shaman' who talks to spirits in lavish wedding

A Norwegian princess has said "I do" to her American shaman beau in a union that's straight out of a fairytale.

Princess Martha Louise, 52, King Harald's eldest daughter, and her 49-year-old partner Durek Verrett pulled out all the stops, inviting social media influencers , reality stars, TV personalities , and select European royals to their three-day festivities.

The proceedings were not without drama, as a nephew of Princess Martha Louise had recently made headlines following an arrest for causing injury and damage.

The small town of Geiranger, known for its breathtaking natural beauty and as a tourist hotspot, hosted the grand event. Against the backdrop of idyllic mountain scenery, a white tent on a verdant lawn served as the venue for the wedding celebration, reports the Express US .

They ensured the musical ambiance was fit for royalty, featuring both Norwegian and American talent, with performances by a gospel choir and singers hailing from Norway's native Sami community.

"It was fantastic! It was Hollywood meets Geiranger," gushed Norwegian TV celebrity Harald Rnneberg. "It was gospel and love. We laughed, we clapped, and we were touched. It was absolutely beautiful."

However, tensions brewed locally when the couple granted Netflix the film rights to their wedding and sold exclusive photo rights to UK's Hello! magazine, a move widely seen as bucking tradition.

Among the attendees at the event were 87-year-old King Harald, who has been in delicate health in recent years, Queen Sonja, and another Norwegian Royal. Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel, along with her brother, Prince Carl Philip, and his wife Princess Sofia, represented Sweden.

No other European royals graced the wedding. The couple has been under intense scrutiny for their dwindling support of the Norwegian royals amidst a series of scandals involving unruly family members facing various criminal charges.

Despite being fourth in line to the Norwegian throne, Princess Martha announced in 2022 that she would step back from her Royal duties after her marriage.

The princess credits Verrett with opening her eyes to the spiritual world, even claiming she can communicate with angels. Her husband, who purports to be a sixth-generation shaman, specializes in interacting with various spirits. He also possesses a medallion believed to ward off spells and cure diseases.

While she will keep her title, a 2019 agreement with her family stipulates she cannot use her Royal connection or title for commercial gain.

The pair got engaged in 2022 following the princess's divorce from author and playwright Ari Behn in 2017, after a 14-year marriage. She has three children from her previous union.
