The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon sees major cutback as fans call for show's cancellation

Nighttime television will be getting a shakeup as NBC unveiled new plan for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon .

The network decided to cut the show down to only four times a week, meaning reruns of the show will now air on Fridays. The change is aligned with what competing nighttime talkshows have been doing in recent years. CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show set the precedent.

NBC is reportedly taking a look at their budget, especially the costs they're accumulating from their late night TV programming, according to Variety . They booted the live band from Late Night with Seth Meyers and completely vacated programming for their 1:30am slot.

Television fans weren't even angry about the choice, noting their distaste for Jimmy Fallon himself. "They should cancel altogether cause Jimmy Fallon stinks," wrote one fan on X, formerly known as Twitter. Another suggested: "How about just replace the host?"

"Somehow not surprised. Fallon sucks at job the fake huge laughs at everything," a third fan wrote while multiple fans jeered that there were only "4 more nights to go" in eliminating the show altogether. A fan said: "That's one less night of fake laughter, awkward clapping and desk slapping."

It's not just the networks that have noticed the plummeting ratings. Fans seem to understand that nighttime talk shows are slowly becoming a thing of the past. One wrote: "These late night shows get fewer viewers than your mid level Twitch streamer."

Fans have been hating on Jimmy for a while now, especially after allegations of misconduct on set spread. In September 2023, seven former employees told Rolling Stone that their mental health suffered while working on the show, with some revealing that guests' dressing rooms were often referred to as "crying rooms." Many reportedly used these rooms to express their emotions.

These staff members held a variety of positions, from production crew to writers. One ex-employee even described their job as their "dream job", but noted that it turned into a "nightmare very quickly". Many staff members revealed that they left the show voluntarily due to poor mental health, while others claimed they were fired.

Jimmy later expressed his remorse during a staff Zoom call, admitting: "It's embarrassing and I feel so bad. Sorry if I embarrassed you and your family and friends."

During the chat, he recognized the frequent shifts in management but made it a point to praise the current showrunner Chris Miller as a "great leader" with no plans of leaving. Emphasizing his vision for the show, Jimmy added: "I want the show to be fun, [it] should be inclusive to everybody. It should be the best show."
