Hazel’s Nook, the beloved Gulf Shores breakfast spot, has closed its doors after 67 years of service.

But fans of the iconic café need not worry – the space won't stay empty for long.

Duck’s Diner, a popular restaurant in neighboring Orange Beach, is set to open a second location in the Hazel’s Nook spot as early as next Wednesday, July 17.

    A Smooth Transition

Richard Schwartz, the owner of Hazel’s Nook since 1980, announced that the café will serve its last customers on Monday.

The building will then be sold to Garrett Spence, co-owner of Duck’s Diner. Spence is eager to move in and start serving customers as soon as possible.

“If we close the deal on Monday and get the renovations done on Tuesday, I hope to be open by Wednesday,” Spence said.

The new location will be called Duck’s Diner Gulf Shores.

Spence and his mother, Michelle Deerman, who bought the original Duck’s Diner in 2014, have been looking for a second location for almost two years.

When they heard about Hazel’s Nook closing, they jumped at the opportunity.

What to Expect at Duck’s Diner Gulf Shores

While Duck’s Diner Gulf Shores will maintain the same breakfast and lunch hours as Hazel’s Nook, there will be some exciting changes.

Unlike Hazel’s, Duck’s Diner will offer a 16-foot bar serving mimosas, bloody marys, and Irish coffee.

The new location will not have a breakfast buffet, but the menu will feature a variety of delicious options.

Breakfast will include omelets, pancakes, country ham, steak and eggs, corned beef hash, and a breakfast burrito.

One of the highlights is the signature banana-stuffed French toast with butter pecan sauce.

For lunch, guests can enjoy burgers, po’ boys, wraps, chicken tenders, ribeye steak, a Rueben sandwich, and Gouda cheese grit cakes topped with grilled shrimp, grilled tomatoes, and Creole sauce.

    Honoring Hazel’s Tradition

Despite the changes, Spence is committed to honoring the legacy of Hazel’s Nook and its longtime owner, Richard Schwartz.

“I really want to do right by Richard,” Spence said. “He didn’t want to sell it to just anybody. I was able to go over there and tell him who I was and what I wanted to do, and he said that I remind him of himself at a younger age.”

Spence will own the building, and he and his mother will co-own the restaurant. They plan to continue the tradition of serving the Gulf Shores community with great food and friendly service.

As Hazel’s Nook closes its doors, a new chapter begins with Duck’s Diner Gulf Shores.

The community can look forward to enjoying their favorite meals in a familiar place, now with a fresh twist.
