Boosting Alabama's Economy and Naval Capabilities

The groundbreaking ceremony featured Alabama Secretary of Commerce Ellen McNair, representing Governor Kay Ivey, who praised Austal USA's contributions.

“Austal USA continues to be both an economic engine to Alabama and a driving force behind U.S. Naval modernization,” said Gov. Ivey.

Celebrating Austal's 25th anniversary in Alabama, she highlighted that the new facility will bring more jobs to Mobile and the Gulf Coast, solidifying the state’s role in national defense.

A Commitment to Growth and Innovation

Austal USA President Michelle Kruger expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, noting the company’s commitment to supporting the National Defense Industrial Strategy and investing in the Mobile region.

The new final assembly building will provide over 192,000 square feet of manufacturing space, with three bays for steel ship construction and the flexibility to produce submarine modules.

Partnering with Pearlson & Pearlson Inc., Kiewit Infrastructure South Co., and Pearlson Shiplift Corporation, Austal USA is poised for substantial growth.

Once completed, the expanded facility will include a 117,000-square-foot steel panel line, two module manufacturing facilities, and seven assembly bays, offering over 400,000 square feet of indoor space.

Covering 180 acres with over 1.5 million square feet of indoor manufacturing space, Austal USA’s Mobile site will significantly enhance the company’s capabilities and contributions to the U.S. Navy.
