    Update: Little growth Friday in Canyon Fire in Tuolumne County, but zero containment

    3:45 p.m. update Friday, Aug. 9: The fire has increased to 85 acres, with zero containment, Cal Fire reports. Its update lists no structures threatened or damaged.

    “Steep terrain and dense fuels are contributing to the fire’s growth,” the update says.

    Evacuation orders are in place for:

    -Canyon Drive

    -Sunrise Drive

    -First Avenue

    -Mira Monte

    -Buchanan Road from Carter to the River Canyon

    -All residences within Ponderosa Hills

    -Grizzly Mine Road

    -Tuolumne Band of Mi-Wuk Indians Rancheria

    Buchanan Road is closed at Carter Street, and Tuolumne road is closed at Ponderosa Hills (Gerber Road).

    There is an evacuation center at the Sonora Senior Center, 540 Greenley Road. It will accept small animals.

    Also, the Tuolumne County Animal Control has a small animal evacuation center at 10040 Victoria Way, Jamestown.

    Original story: Evacuation orders were issued Friday morning for areas surrounding Tuolumne City due to what’s been named the Canyon Fire.

    Ponderosa Hills and the Tuolumne Rancheria area from Tuolumne Road N to the east were ordered to leave immediately.

    The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office posted that the fire first was reported about 11:45 Thursday night in the canyon off of Buchanan Road near Canyon Drive in Tuolumne. As of Friday morning, it has burned about 75 acres, with a moderate rate of spread.

    The following roads and areas are under the evacuation order:

    - Canyon Drive

    - Sunrise Drive

    - First Ave

    - Mira Monte

    - Buchanan Road from Carter to the River Canyon

    - All residences within Ponderosa Hills

    - Grizzly Mine Road

    - Vine Street

    - Baker Street

    - Carter Street

    - Madrone Street

    - Birch Street

    Evacuation warnings have been issued for the Tuolumne Band of Mi-Wuk Indians Rancheria. Tuolumne City area is no longer under evacuation warning (Carter St., Birch St., Vine St., Madrone St., Baker St.).

    The cause of the fire has not been determined.
