Alabama will be starting a shot clock in high school basketball starting during the 2024-25 season, and the Alabama High School Athletic Association clarified some of the rules around it on Wednesday.

The introduction of a shot clock was announced by the AHSAA back in April, following the end of the AHSAA Final Four. It will be used in non-championship and non-area games and is completely optional for now. In April, there were questions, and some of those were answered Wednesday. The shot clock will be 35 seconds and will be reset to 25 seconds in the frontcourt.

There was no date given on when shot clock use would become enforced in all games, including championship events. The shot clock was used over the summer during events, so the AHSAA and director of officials Ken Washington have already gotten some feedback.

"Those who have used it so far, they really have not seen a difference," Washington said.

Another big change coming is a one-way communication method for softball next spring. It follows baseball, which approved the move last year. The National Federation of State High School Associations approved the move over the summer, opening the ability for the AHSAA to have it.

It will be one-way communication from a coach in the dugout to the catcher, using either a system like PitchCom or possibly even an Apple Watch or other smartwatches.
