PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry picked up the second win of its young season by defeating East Wilkes 3-0 on Aug. 22.

The Surry Cardinals handled their business against the Wilkes Cardinals with set victories of 25-16, 25-11 and 25-17.

Thursday’s match was the first between East Surry and East Wilkes since 2019 and just the second since 2013 (via MaxPreps). East Surry has won the past seven meetings against East Wilkes.

East Surry improved to 3-2 with the Aug. 22 victory, while East Wilkes dropped to 1-3.

The Battle of the Cardinals featured just six ties and four lead changes across the match’s three sets. Every tie and lead change occurred before either team scored six points in a set, and the third set didn’t feature any ties or lead changes.

The Cardinals were tied up at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5 in the opening set before attacks from Maggy Sechrist put East Surry up 8-5. East Wilkes’ Olivia Stanley helped the visitors stay in the fight until the scoreboard read 11-9.

The home team kicked it into another gear on the back row, led by libero Mackenzie Davis, and kept rallies alive at all costs. This allowed Ella Simmons to set up assists for attackers such as Merry Parker Boaz and Myra Furches.

After leading 11-9 East Surry closed the first set with a 14-6 run.

The second set featured the largest run of the night by either squad. East Wilkes took its only lead at 3-2 but stayed in the fight by forcing long rallies. The visitors cut the advantage to 11-7, then East Surry responded with an 8-0 run. Sechrist led the Surry Cardinals from the service line during the run, evening picking up a pair of aces in the process.

East Wilkes scored three of four points after the run ended, but it was too little too late as East Surry secured the 25-11 win.

East Surry scored the first three points of the final set and never relinquished its advantage. The home Cardinals led by as many as 10 points in the set at 20-10. East Surry utilized its deep bench to clinch the final set 25-17.

East Surry is set to begin Foothills 2A Conference play on Aug. 27 by traveling to North Wilkes (3-2). East Wilkes will begin Northwest 1A Conference competition the same day by traveling to Mount Airy (0-3).
