Funding grows for streetscape project
Grant funding continues to pour into Mount Airy for a “streetscape” project in the area of Franklin and Willow Streets downtown, which will include burying utility lines and other enhancements. The latest financial boost has come in the form of $487,500 from the Rural Transformation Grant Fund of the N.C. Department of Commerce. Traphill woman charged with attempted murder
A 39-year-old woman is facing multiple charges after allegedly stabbing a man on April 26. Selena Lovette was arrested on charges of attempted first-degree murder, misdemeanor domestic violence, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and misdemeanor child abuse. According to the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, the arrest stems from a domestic dispute at 224 Lovette Lane in the Traphill Community. Deputies were sent there in reference to a stabbing. Upon arrival, deputies learned the victim was en route to Hugh Chatham Hospital in a personal vehicle. After further investigation deputies learned this was a domestic situation and Lovette was charged and arrested. The individual who was stabbed has been identified as 42-year old Joel Spicer. Authorities said he was treated and released the same day.
Granite Bears repeat as Northwest 1A Conference Track Champions
DANBURY — The Northwest 1A Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship was held May 2 at North Stokes High School. After helping members of his family struggling in the current, Benny ‘Benji’ Ernest Bowers Jr., 44, of Dobson was pulled under by the Yadkin River just before 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 28. All manner of local fire, rescue, and law enforcement coordinated a multi-county search and recovery effort for Bowers whose body was found late the next morning. Chairman Van Tucker praised the response efforts and asked the community to remember Bowers family during this time. A GoFundMe has been set up for the family.
May is motorcycle awareness month
May is motorcycle safety awareness month and Alliance Insurance Services is helping to spread the word to riders. They want all motorcyclists to be safe and prepared. “Motorcycles only make up about 3% of vehicles that are on the road, but unfortunately they account for 13% of all people killed in traffic accidents,” said Christopher Cook, owner of Alliance Insurance Services. “That’s why it’s important for all of us to be mindful of safe driving practices.” ...

Surry Community College budget holds even, student enrollment up
Surry Community College President Dr. David Shockley told the Surry County Board of Commissioners in the next fiscal year his school would be operating on virtually the same budget as the present year, even with a small uptick in enrollment. For simplicity’s sake he told the board that the budget request was nearly identical to the school’s request from the previous year.
