NATCHEZ—A Natchez woman has recently completed a years-long project of making new draperies for the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion.

Mississippi First Lady Elle Reeves was so pleased with Carolyn Clark, 79, of Natchez’s work that she made a Facebook post featuring Clark and the new draperies.

Clark was contracted by Richard Branyan and Lower Lodge Conservation and Museum Services of Natchez, who has been working with the state on restoration at the Governor’s Mansion for about four years.

The drapery portion of the work has taken longer than expected because Clark’s work was interrupted by open heart surgery in April 2023.

“I am almost back to normal now, health-wise,” Clark said. “I have been doing this in Natchez for about 50 years. The Governor’s Mansion is going to be my last hurrah.”

Clark, who began sewing at age 9, got into the drapery-making business out of necessity.

“I had three children to support. I had a woman tell me if you learn how to do this, you will never be out of a job, and she was right. I have never had a day in the last 50 years that I couldn’t be making drapes,” she said.

Clark also makes other window treatments, upholstery for teaster beds, bedspreads, “the whole nine yards.”

The First Lady’s Facebook post features a photo of Clark on a ladder adjusting the drapery.

“I used to install the draperies, but my son, Kenny DeLaughter, does that for me now, although I do have to go up there to adjust the swags and straighten hems,” she said.

Clark made draperies — curtains, and valances — for the home’s state dining room and gold parlor, with seven windows in all.

“I have worked at a lot of old homes in Natchez over the years. They are talking about doing a few more windows at the Governor’s Mansion, but that’s going to be the last big project for me.

“I do appreciate all the compliments we have received on this job. I have enjoyed doing this work. I have worked at it a long time and have always enjoyed what I do.”
