Plain Talk football contest returns for new season

One of The Newport Plain Talk’s most popular promotional contests begins next week.

The Newport Plain Talk’s annual Football Contest returns for another year.

See Page B7 of today’s paper for the first contest entry form.

Picks are due by 5 p.m. on Wednesday in each game week. Entries that are mailed in must be postmarked by Wednesday.

“We’re excited to bring the contest back for another season,” Newport Plain Talk Publisher Duane Uhls said. “This is one of our most popular items every year and like each season, I expect the competition to be plentiful throughout the season.”

The rules for the contest remain unchanged. Tiebreaker games will be identified before the games are played. In the list of games, one game will be marked with an asterisk. That game will be used as the weekly tiebreaker.

In the event of a weekly tie, the entrant who is closest to the total points scored in that game will win the tiebreaker.

In the event of a season tie, the person who is nearest the total points of all 10 games in the final week of the contest will be declared the winner.

This year’s contest will be played for 10 weeks. Complete rules for the 2024 contest can be found on the contest page each week.

Prizes will be awarded to the top seven finishers.

The grand prize, once again, is a $100 gift certificate to the Jewelry Connection of Newport.

Second-place prize is a $50 gift certificate to Tan Easy Tanning Salon of Newport.

Third-place prize is a $50 gift certificate to Monterrey Mexican Restaurant of Newport.

The fourth-place prize is a $50 gift certificate to Backwoods Bargains of Newport.

The fifth-place prize is a $50 gift certificate to Flowers by Wilma of Newport.

Sixth-place prize is a quick lube oil change and filter, courtesy of Stinnett Automotive of Newport.

Seventh-place prize will award a free pair of Costa sunglasses from Vision Source in Newport.

Weekly winners will be presented with two prizes. Each weekly winner will receive a Large Hot-N-Ready Cheese or Pepperoni Extra Most-Bestest Pizza and a Crazy Combo from Little Caesars Pizza of Newport, and one free scoop ice cream cone or cup from Bryant Town Donuts.

Weekly winners must claim their prizes by Wednesday of the following week, or will forfeit their prizes.
