Transgender issues top the agenda at Lincoln Day dinner

The annual Republican Lincoln Day Dinner featured Riley Gaines, a women’s single-sex space advocate who is a rising presence on the conservative speakers' circuit.

Introducing Gaines was State Rep. Gary Click, R-Vickery, whose House Bill 68 was passed when the Ohio House and Senate voted to overrule Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto of the bill on transgender healthcare and sports. The passage includes the Save Women’s Sports Act and the Saving Adolescents from Experimentation Act. An ACLU lawsuit has resulted in a temporary pause being placed on HB 68, the S.A.F.E. Act and Save Women’s’ Sports Act by a Franklin County Common Pleas Court judge.

excerpts from Gaines talk, but there is also a large photo gallery, which you can find here. With more than 450 attending, the event brought people from more than just Sandusky and Seneca counties.

Mailbag: Reader wants 24-hour weight room but lives outside Fremont

A reader wants to lift weights after working the late shift. However, he lives outside of Fremont. He wants to know if the Fremont Recreation Center is an option.

Cody Bischoff, the Fremont Recreation superintendent, encourages him to check out the Rec Center, because it is definitely an option. The 24-hour facility was opened up to non-city residents in 2019.

"The administrative side of just determining residency was kind of more of a burden than a benefit, so we saw our membership numbers actually go up in eliminating those (residency requirements) and making a few changes in making it accessible to folks in, for example, Ballville and Sandusky Township," Bischoff said.

In 2023, the facility saw 15,728 visits.

"For us, it was pretty obvious that a lot of people needed to take advantage of access outside of normal business hours," Bischoff said.

He also encouraged people to stop by to see the list of other activities, outside of the weightroom, that can be accessed at times that might be considered odd hours.
