    $50 an hour to work at the NC State Fair? Apply to these jobs to work at the fairgrounds

    It’s almost that time of year again: Fair season.

    The NC State Fair will be returning to the capital with dozens of thrilling rides and roller coasters, carnival games and classic deep-fried fair foods Oct. 17-27. If you’d like to experience the magic of the state’s largest annual event from behind the scenes, now’s your chance.

    The fair team is looking to fill several positions for those who want to work at the fairgrounds this season, including:

    • Cash room worker

    • Competition worker

    • Exhibit manager

    • Exhibit worker

    • Gate monitors

    • Head cashier

    • Information booth attendant

    • Public announcer

    • Receptionist

    • Ticket seller

    • Ticket taker

    “N.C. State Fair employees are highly valued members of our fair’s long-lasting legacy,” Kent Yelverton, N.C. State Fair director, said in a press release. “The fair has been an anticipated part of people’s lives since the 1850s and is well-known nationwide. That kind of success can be credited to every team member who has ever decided to take up a job at the fairgrounds.”

    How much do NC State Fair jobs pay?

    Hourly rates range from $15 to $22 for the temporary positions, according to the state fair job listings.

    State Fair law enforcement officer positions pay $20 to $50 . (See below for details.)

    What experience do you need to work at the NC State Fair?

    Interested applicants are required to have at least a high school or General Educational Development diploma, or an equivalent combination of both education and experience, the job listing site says.

    Applicants also must have the ability to:

    • Lift and carry 10-20 lbs.

    • Provide excellent customer service

    • Multi-task

    • Follow policies and guidelines

    • Facilitate the flow of work and coordinate activities with other staff

    • Stand or sit for long periods of time in the weather

    Do NC State Fair employees get free rides/food?

    No , employees do not get such perks.

    “Our temporary fair employees (and the full-time ones for that matter) don’t get free rides or discounts on food. Such a benefit would require coordinating with the food and ride vendors,” Brandon Herring, public information officer for NCDA&CS Public Affairs , told The News & Observer.

    Law enforcement officers needed for NC State Fair

    The State Fair law enforcement team needs officers to maintain a safe environment for guests at the fairgrounds.

    Pay ranges:

    • $20-$35 for non-sworn officers.
    • $30-$50 for sworn officers.

    Non-sworn officers should have the following qualifications, according to the job posting :

    • Knowledge of the standard safety, surveillance and security practices and equipment.
    • Knowledge of standard methods of reporting and handling emergencies such as disturbances, fires, medical and security threats.
    • Ability to use security equipment (e.g. radios, switchboards/phones, flashlights, fire extinguishers, surveillance cameras, alarm panels, card access or other electronic security systems).
    • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, manage and direct traffic flow, climb stairs and work in inclement weather.
    • May require the ability to complete emergency medical technician (EMT) training and meet re-certification standards as required.

    Sworn officers are required to be certified as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, according to the job posting .

    Aside from the general fairground jobs, carnival positions need to be filled for this year’s state fair.

    Food service, custodial service and carnival positions at the 2024 State Fair are not hired by the team behind the N.C. State Fair — and instead operated by Powers Great American Midways.
