Raleigh’s Morgan St. Food Hall will say goodbye to one of its biggest names this month

The brick-and-mortar location of a national food truck brand will depart the popular Morgan Street Food Hall this month.

Cousins Maine Lobster , the lobster roll with a cult-like following, has decided to close its downtown Raleigh food hall location at the end of August. The last day for a succulent lobster roll at Morgan Street Food Hall will be Saturday, Aug. 31.

Despite the food hall location closing, Cousins says its fleet of food trucks will remain on the road, popping up at breweries, festivals and office parks every week.

“While this marks the end of an era for our beloved brick-and-mortar location, we are excited to shift our focus onto our mobile food trucks, where we’ll continue serving up the same delicious Maine lobster dishes you’ve come to love,” the Triangle Cousins Maine Lobster owners wrote on their Facebook page .

“We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all our customers, staff, and the Morgan Street Food Hall community for your support over the years. We look forward to seeing you at our food trucks around the city, where our lobster rolls and more will continue to be a part of your favorite foodie experiences.”

When Morgan Street opened in 2018, Cousins was one of the big names attached to the project, taking over a prime space in the center of the food hall. Cousins Maine Lobster is best known as a national line of food trucks that once appeared on the ABC reality show “Shark Tank.” The Triangle franchise launched in 2015 and the pricey indulgence earned praise from former dining critic for The News & Observer, Greg Cox.

“The Maine lobster roll and its Connecticut cousin share top billing, and deservedly so,” Cox wrote in a 2016 food truck review . “Both deliver chunks of sweet lobster meat in such abundance that you can barely see the buttered and toasted New England style top-split hot dog roll they’re served on. On the classic Maine version, the lobster is chilled and the bun gets a light smear of mayo. For the Connecticut lobster roll, the meat is gently warmed in butter and given a final drizzle of lemon butter.”

Morgan Street was the first of the Triangle food halls to open its doors. By design, the food hall has seen about half of its original vendors depart, bringing in new small food businesses getting projects off the ground.

The Raleigh brick-and-mortar location of Cousins Maine Lobster was distinctive for the brand, as the food hall stand was only one of five restaurant locations in the country for the company. Cousins has developed its following with dozens of trucks across the country, in 25 states and Washington, DC.
