Portland firefighters extinguish Ross Island blaze
A blaze Saturday on Portland’s Ross Island has been extinguished, a spokesperson for Portland Fire & Rescue said Sunday. The fire, which sent black smoke billowing over Portland, started around 4:30 p.m. It burned equipment from Ross Island Sand & Gravel and tractor tires but no structures were involved, said Katia Minor, a firefighter and Fire Bureau spokesperson.

Thunderstorms sweep Portland, raising fire danger
Very loud thunder could be heard in Portland on Sunday morning but the worst of it is over, according to the National Weather Service in Portland. The weather service recorded hundreds of lightning strikes over northwest Oregon and southwest Washington through Sunday morning around 10:30 a.m., but the storm was expected to leave Portland by about 11 a.m., said Jon Liu, a meteorologist with the weather service in Portland.

We wish to set the record straight regarding the Coquille Indian Tribe’s Medford casino project, (“Opinion: Attacks on Coquille tribe’s casino proposal undermine tribal sovereignty,” July 2). Coquille claims a connection to Medford; Coquille Chair Brenda Meade writes that when Congress restored federal recognition of the tribe in 1989 it “studied where our people lived, traded and worked, both historically and during termination.” However, any suggestion of an ancestral connection is simply not true.
