Oxford will likely have a new, indoor pickleball arena shortly.

With the Fiscal Year 2025 city budget in its final stages, part of the process for the Mayor and Board of Aldermen is to decide how to spend the funds the city receives from its 2% food and beverage tax, the Baptist trust fund and the hotel/motel tax.

In the proposed budget one of those projects is to spend $1 million on constructing 13 pickleball courts in the old Hayakawa building on Industrial Park Road.

The funds would come from the 2% food and beverage fund.

The building was purchased by the city in 2019 and was originally slated to be converted into a new Oxford Police Department.

However, those plans were scrapped and the city instead purchased the former Oxford Enterprise Center which is currently under construction to be the new OPD.

If approved, the facility will be turned over to the Oxford Park Commission to operate and manage.

A public hearing on the 2025 budget will be held at 5 p.m. on Sept. 3 at City Hall.
