Become a better fan in 2024
Y2K was nearly a quarter of a century ago. Realizing that made me feel old, so I thought you should too. You’re welcome. Yet another year is coming to a close and I am once again fortunate enough to be here at the end. The privilege of existence carries with it the responsibility to improve. The 2024 version of David should be better than the 2023 version, am I right? ...
Hoggard column: Your closeness to God based on actions, not feelings
Christmas reminds us that God Almighty has laid aside deity and power to enter the life we understand with all its fragility and heartache. Jesus was born so that a perfect human sacrifice could be given on our behalf. The one who made the rules entered into mortality to play the game perfectly and then die to cover all the gross transgressions we performed. Jesus flawlessly lived and gave that perfect life because God’s essence is to give. ...

Editor’s note: Today, The Perquimans Weekly takes a look back at some of the top stories in the county during 2023. Perquimans County was busy in 2023 as residents of Hertford and Winfall elected new mayors, the county and town of Hertford both approved new budgets that increased property tax and utility rates, and the Lady Pirates volleyball team made another deep run into the state playoffs. Hertford and Winfall...

Orr column: Egg nog tiramisu great holiday 'pick me up' dessert
As we round the corner on a busy holiday season in our little town of Edenton I was reminded by friends to take a moment to relax and seek peace. That’s not always easy to do when our “to do” lists are longer than hours in a day. But a few minutes of meditation or prayer can often be just what we need. Take time to enjoy this wondrous season wherever your sanctuary may be — in a chapel or a walk in the woods. ...
No contested county races on 2024 ballot
While there are plenty of contested races at the top of the Perquimans County election ballot next year — including for state representative and state senator — there won’t be any for any county offices. There are three open seats on the Perquimans Board of Commissioners in next fall’s election and only three candidates who had filed for them by last week’s filing deadline. Similarly, there are three open seats on the Perquimans Board of Education and only three candidates who filed for those as...

Throckmorton column: Why he's the Prince of Peace
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” — Isaiah 9:6 Seven hundred years before His birth, Isaiah predicted His coming. The verbal description in the verse mentioned above leaves no doubt he is speaking of Jesus Christ, our redeemer. ...

Something to celebrate: PCRA marks 50 years of ownership at Newbold-White House
Perquimans County Restoration Association members had two reasons to celebrate at the Newbold-White House last week. Major surgery on car engine is less scary now
Many years ago, I visited my longest-serving vehicle while it was undergoing surgery in the hospital. The sight of my 1997 Ford F-250 missing half of its engine was horrifying, but I stayed strong and did not let my face show the shock. The truck recovered and is still with me. Its engine developed a coolant leak about a year after we moved to North Carolina, where I had not yet settled on a trusted mechanic. The truck was drivable, so I brought it more...
