McNair new extension agent in JDC

The Jefferson Davis County Board of Supervisors met for the second meeting of August Monday morning in Prentiss. Prayer was led by Ricky Barrett before the minutes were approved.

LaTonya Ramsey, with the MSU Extension Office, introduced the board to the new Jefferson Davis County Extension Agent, Akeem McNair. McNair comes into the position following Thomas Brewer who retired earlier this year after 21 years of service to the county.

“I am blessed to have the opportunity to become your agent where I want to implement and be able to bring 4H back to how it used to be when I was a kid,” said McNair. “I want to be a part of the community where I can help and lead in other ways that come about,” he said.

Ramsey also expressed concerns to the board regarding recurring mold found in the extension office on Pearl Avenue. She will submit quotes for remediation at a future meeting.

During engineer Les Dungan’s report, the board approved the Engineer Services Agreement for the Community Heritage Preservation Grant Program on the courthouse roof rehabilitation.

Dungan informed the board that it was time to match the FAA grant funds for the ongoing airport improvements project at the Prentiss-Jefferson Davis County Airport. This grant will resurface the runway and add new striping. To leverage the grant funds, the county and the Town of Prentiss split the five percent that the grant does not pay. The county and town will pay $3,784.50 in order to receive the additional 95 percent which is $75,690.

“The airport is in really good shape right now,” said Dungan. “The use of this grant money will help keep it that way,” he said.

County CPA Cathy Slocum discussed the budget in her report. The board approved increasing the budget three mills for the general fund. One mill is the equivalent of $96,500.

The contract for AAA Ambulance Service was presented to the board for signing effective Oct. 1. The board requested a representative of the company be present at the next board meeting to provide further service information. The county pays $71,600 per year for AAA ambulance services.

In other news, the board approved the following without opposition before entering into executive session and adjourning:

• Approved minutes.

• Approved Board President signing Budget Certification with the JDC School District.

• Approved change in quote on flooring for John Thompson Athletic Complex for $239.

• Approved school bus turnarounds in District 3 at PRVO Barnes Avenue, Sistrunk 533 Good Hope Road, Burns 555 Willie Buckley Road and in District 4 at Barnes 710 Granby Road.

• Approved refund from tax sale (property sold in error).

• Approved painting hallway and back conference room and purchase of back entry door at Five County Building.

• Approved employees attending meetings and conventions.

• Approved spreading into the minutes Employee Action Form for the Sheriff’s Department and District 2.

• Approved payment of invoice to Southern MS Planning and Development District for $9,446.44 for Senior Citizen Services.

• Approved overage on purchase order in District 2 for cold mix for $2.90.

• Approved credit card report and payment of the same.

• Approved acceptance of opioid settlement checks.

• Approved advertising county resources at the JDC Forestry Banquet.

• Approved deleting from inventory Asset #502 Lexmark printer, Asset #1751 Hewlett Packard 2035 printer and Asset #1915 Infoprint 6500 printer for Tax Assessor.

• Approved sending notice to Otis Elevator to discontinue monthly elevator inspections for old jail.

• Approved claims.
