PROVIDENCE − Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across Southern New England Monday afternoon into Monday night, with the greatest risk from noon to 9 p.m., the National Weather Service says.

"Main threats are damaging winds, large hail, & heavy downpours which may lead to localized flooding," the weather service said on X.

The storms could drop chunks of hail an inch or bigger in some places, the weather service said.

"The severe weather setup is still rather similar to the one we saw on Thursday July 15th where a strong cold pool dropped south from Northern New England," the weather service said in its forecast discussion . "This event brought severe thunderstorms that dropped up to 1.5 inch hail and numerous reports of damaging winds."

"Quiet and warm weather returns Tuesday," the weather service said. "Showers and thunderstorms return to the region on Wednesday. This is followed by a cooler and quiet end to the week before wet weather returns next weekend."
