The Rhode Island high school football season is rapidly approaching.

That means Newport County teams – Middletown, Portsmouth, Rogers and Tiverton - will be back in action is short order. We compiled the schedules for these island teams, which are below, and pulled out games to watch for each week.

Tiverton and Middletown will play each other in the Portsmouth-hosted Injury Fund exhibition on Sept. 5 with the Patriots facing Rogers. The Tigers and Islanders are slated for 5 p.m. with the second game to follow.

For the full schedules and games to watch, read on below.

    Rogers at Middletown

    Week 1 - Friday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m.

Starting off with a massive cross-island rivalry at Gaudet Middle School. The Islanders topped the Vikings 14-13 in this matchup last season behind Juleun Gilman’s 104 rush yards and two touchdowns. Gilman and the seniors that delivered last year’s title have since graduated, can Rogers reverse the tide this fall?

    Portsmouth at Cranston West

    Week 2 - Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.

You might have to travel for this one, but that won’t be necessary for this Journal reporter. Cranston West is right down the road from me, making this an easy assignment. Both programs are in Division I this year and trying to make noise.

    Tiverton at Scituate

    Week 3 - Saturday, Sept. 28 at 11 a.m.

The Tigers (3-5 last year) nearly missed out on a playoff berth, which would’ve been their first since 2019 when they finished runners-up in Division IV. Building on last fall’s success would be a step in the right direction for Tiverton and a Week 3 road meeting with Scituate is a good measuring stick.

    Mount Pleasant at Middletown

    Week 4 – Friday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m.

We check in again with the Division III defending champions. The Islanders moved to D-II this season and host a Kilties team that finished 3-3 in that league last fall.

    Tiverton at Exeter-West Greenwich

    Week 5 – Saturday, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m.

This Division IV matchup pits the Tigers against the EWG/Prout co-op in an early Saturday morning contest. EWG went 7-1 last year before falling in the semifinals. A win on the road for the Tigers would go a long way.

    Rogers at Ponaganset

    Week 6 – Friday, Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m.

Does Rogers need extra motivation? The Chieftains scheduled this week for their homecoming and the Vikings could play spoiler on the road.

    Middletown at Tolman

    Week 7 – Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.

Tolman (4-2 last year) also moved up to D-II with the Islanders this fall. Let’s check in to see who had the smoother transition.

    Portsmouth at Hendricken

    Week 8 - Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.

The Patriots turn the calendar with a road date in Warwick against the defending state champion.

    Thanksgiving Day

I won’t make this pick for you, so you’ll have to decide who you want to spend your holiday morning with. The Patriots host the Islanders at 10 a.m., while Rogers welcomes Tiverton at 10:15. Either way, dinner can wait, there’s football to be watched.
