    Education roundup: Canton resident wins school superintendent award

    DOYLESTOWN – Canton resident and Chippewa Local Schools Superintendent Todd Osborn has won the Superintendent Award of Excellence by the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, according to a school district news release. This award recognizes superintendents who exhibit exemplary leadership and a steadfast commitment to educational excellence.

    Upon receiving the award, Osborn said, “Receiving this honor is not just a personal achievement but a testament to our entire school community’s dedication and hard work. I am proud of what we have accomplished together and excited for what the future holds.”

    The award, accompanied by a $1,000 grant for the district, recognizes Osborn’s innovative leadership and strategic initiatives. These include the creation of pivotal roles such as the curriculum coordinator and engaging educational programs like “Todd Talks.” Additionally, his introduction of the “Needle Mover Award” to honor outstanding staff members, and the establishment of “Chipp Time” for enhanced professional development, have significantly propelled the educational standards and community involvement in our district.

    Osborn was formally celebrated in July at the annual Jennings Award Banquet.

    Five Distinguished Fairless Falcons to join Hall of Honor

    BREWSTER – The Distinguished Fairless Falcon Award Committee has announced the 2024 Class of Distinguished Fairless Falcons.

    Those to be inducted into the Hall of Honor are:

    • Barry Askren – A teacher, principal, director of special programs and interim superintendent of Fairless Local Schools.
    • RG Drage – A member of the Navarre High School Class of 1934 and superintendent of Plain Local and Stark County schools, he helped draft the legislation that created career tech education in Ohio. He served in public education for 43 years.
    • Scotty Morrison – A member of the Brewster High School Class of 1946, he was the first head coach for the Fairless Falcons football team in 1960, the Stark County Football Coach of the Year in 1975 and the head coach of the North-South All Star Game in 1976. He was inducted into the Ohio High School Football Hall of Fame.
    • Ed Whitmore – A member of the Fairless High School Class of 1970, he was a teacher, coach and administrator for Fairless Local Schools for more than 20 years. He served as the principal at Fairless High School, has been active in serving the community, and was the inaugural head coach for the Fairless girls softball team.
    • Aaron Melhorn – A member of the Fairless High School Class of 2007, he was a three-time state champion in cross country and track. He was a standout athlete at Malone University, where he is a 10-time All-American, national champion and school record holder in multiple events.

    The Distinguished Fairless Falcon Award Committee exists to annually recognize outstanding Fairless individuals who have achieved distinction in their lives and/or chosen fields after high school through significant contributions to their careers, communities or personal achievements.

    The Hall of Honor recognizes alumni, faculty, staff, non-graduates and community members who have brought honor to Fairless Local Schools, to motivate youth to excel, and to foster pride, scholarship, preserve good sportsmanship, and citizenship in the schools, city and community.

    Walsh University appoints new director of campus ministry

    NORTH CANTON – Walsh University has appointed Claire Corridoni as the new director of campus ministry. Corridoni earned a bachelor of science in education from Walsh in 2018 as a Blouin Scholar. Since graduation, she has served in various roles across multiple parishes and dioceses, according to a news release. She has worked with NET Ministries in the U.S. and Scotland, leading teams of young adults in retreat ministry and discipleship. Corridoni’s educational background includes a spiritual direction certification from Divine Mercy University and additional formation in theology of the body.

    In her new role, Corridoni will be responsible for ministering to the spiritual needs of the Walsh University community.

    Scholarships available

    The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management has created $32,000 in academic scholarships, divided equally between $16,000 for students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate education in approved schools and who are also student certified hazardous materials managers, and $16,000 for students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate education in approved schools and who are also student associate safety and health managers.

    IHMM has named this scholarship the Dr. John H. Frick Memorial IHMM Scholarship in honor of one of the principal founders of IHMM, who died in 2023.

    Walsh University athletes to be fitted exclusively in Nike gear

    NORTH CANTON – The Walsh University Athletic Department has a new licensing agreement with Nike and BSN Sports, the nation’s leading manufacturer and distributor of sporting goods and apparel, and a division of Varsity Brands. This partnership will make BSN Sports the exclusive provider of apparel, footwear and equipment for all Walsh athletic programs Additionally, Walsh Athletics will launch an online store available year-round.

    Aultman College’s nursing program ranks in top 10 in Ohio

    CANTON – Nursing advocacy website RNcareers.org has named Aultman College one of the best nursing programs in Ohio for its bachelor of science in nursing program. The college ranked sixth in Ohio. The rankings are based on several factors, such as tuition costs, academic excellence, student satisfaction, career outcomes and school reputation.

    Aultman College Aultman College is the only healthcare-system-affiliated college in Northeast Ohio and has the longest-running nursing education program in Northeast Ohio.
